Silver Mesa Spelling Bee

The PTA's school Spelling Bee for 3rd-5th grades will be held on February 19th, 2016. Class spelling bees will be held the week before the school spelling bee.

Spelling lists were sent home just before the Christmas break but just in case they never made it out of the backpack, they are available to read and download here.

The top two winners of our school spelling bee will advance to the County Spelling Bee that will be held on March 19th, 2016.

Silver Mesa Science Fair

The PTA Silver Mesa Science Fair will be held at the end of January and this year we will be having a STEAM night (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) the evening of January 25th for families to view Science Fair and Reflections entries.

Students doing a project will be required to research a subject and have hands-on experience with the subject. They will also be required to prepare a poster for their presentation.

If you are interested in doing a science fair project, please complete the attached form and return it to school by December 4th, 2015.

PTA's Listen to the Music Program

Masterpiece Music's "Listen! to the Music" is a new PTA music program introduced to Silver Mesa in 2015 and is taught in all grades (Kindergarten through 5^th).

The program is taught every other month in conjunction with Masterpiece Art. The goals of the program are to:

Introduce students to the joy of listening to music (instrumental, vocal, classical, contemporary, etc.)

Introduce various instrument families to students. Allow students to hear instruments from each of these families.

Provide listening activities that allow students to hear music examples of each family.

Provide listening activities that allow students to identify what instruments they hear.

Introduce students to a myriad of composers.

You can download the lesson plans for each grade, as well as download all the individual music files to listen to at home!!

I have been a part of PTA this year and have also watched how parents have stepped up to make this year awesome for our kids! Parents have helped with Class Parties, Reflections, Red Ribbon Week, Book Fair, Field Trips, and so much more...nothing can work without our amazing Parent Volunteers!!

There is a voice of parents that are looking into changing our PTA to a PTO (Parent Teacher Organization). They will be going around trying get about 190 signatures from Silver Mesa parents, and if they are successful with this, there will be a vote as to which parent organization is recognized at our school. The beauty of this, is that PTA is already the recognized Parent Organization, so if you like PTA, cast your vote early, and don't sign the petition for this change.
